I find out why growth isn't working, then rebuild the parts that are broken.

I'm Tyler Hayzlett, currently Chief Marketing Officer at C-Suite Network. Most of my career has been spent in businesses where somebody had to understand the whole commercial system, decide what actually needed to change, and then go build it.

Membership, media, events, software, sponsorships, consulting and publishing. Different business models, same job.

01 / Approach

Growth problems are almost never a channel problem.

When something isn't working, the cause is usually further upstream than anyone wants it to be. Wrong buyer. Wrong offer. Positioning nobody can repeat back. A sales process that contradicts the marketing. So I start at the beginning and work down the line until I find the thing that's actually broken.

Here's the line. Every point on it has a question attached. Hover to read them.

Business model

What business are we actually in, and how does it make money?

Knowing one channel well isn't the useful part. Understanding how the whole thing connects, while knowing enough about execution to know what's realistic, is.

02 / What I run now

The job, currently.

I'm CMO at C-Suite Network, an executive membership and media business with several revenue lines that behave very differently from each other.

I lead marketing across membership, executive events and councils, the media network, a software product line, sponsorships and branded services.

I work with a small cross-functional group covering operations, events, community, CRM, development, social and sales, plus outside agencies and platforms.

Enough of the execution still runs through me that I'm rarely more than one step from the work itself.

Four things worth explaining properly.

Roles varied, so the language does too. Some of this I built, some I led, some I helped create alongside good people.

30 days C-Suite Network CRM → Software

A forced CRM migration that turned into a software business.

The problem was a deadline. The opportunity was hiding in the platform we picked to solve it.

The situation

Our contact database sat in an enterprise CRM environment that had become too expensive and cumbersome for what we needed. I had about a month to find something better and move everyone onto it.

What I did

I recommended a CRM and marketing automation platform that solved our internal problem and also opened a software opportunity nobody had asked for. I ultimately took ownership of the platform: architecture, pipelines, automation, billing, onboarding and support.

Where it landed

The software offering became part of the membership model and now serves hundreds of customer accounts, with recognition from the platform for sales volume. I still run it.

  • Vendor evaluation
  • CRM architecture
  • Productization
  • Pricing and packaging
  • Customer operations
100M+ C-Suite Radio 2017 to present

A podcast request that became a media network.

Our Chairman wanted a show. The infrastructure that made one show possible could just as easily host hundreds.

The situation

The ask was to launch a single podcast. While researching how to do it, we realized the same infrastructure could support an entire network.

What I did

Helped build it from nothing: concept, business model, positioning, sales materials and the host acquisition strategy used to recruit business podcasters onto the platform. Later developed the investor presentation around the media opportunity.

Where it landed

400+ shows, 75,000+ episodes and more than 100 million downloads, plus an advertising and sponsorship channel that hadn't existed before.

  • Positioning
  • Supply acquisition
  • Media monetization

Portfolio Partner & client GTM Ongoing

Sponsors kept buying exposure when what they needed was a go-to-market.

Hand me a business and I'll find where the path to the customer breaks.

The situation

Partners arrived expecting audience access to produce customers. When it didn't, the assumption was that the audience was wrong. It usually wasn't.

What I did

Built a real go-to-market function around the partnerships. For each one I work through buyer, offer, positioning, economics and the systems already in place, then build what's missing: campaign architecture, landing pages, email, outbound, webinars, events, sales enablement and CRM tracking.

Where it landed

Multiple partner GTM programs run concurrently, with standard dossiers, plans and reporting that tie activity to pipeline and revenue instead of impressions. This is the work I like most.

  • Buyer and offer
  • Campaign architecture
  • Sales enablement

~165/yr The Hayzlett Group 2010 to 2017

Building the demand engine behind a professional speaking business.

Evidence that I came up through sales rather than around it.

The situation

The business ran on reputation and inbound interest. It needed a repeatable way to produce paid engagements.

What I did

Reverse engineered the market and built the audiences: certified meeting professionals, corporate event planners, speaker bureaus, association leaders, CEOs and CMOs, enterprise and franchise buyers. Identified the bureaus that mattered, built those relationships in person, and handled prospecting, proposals, contracts and client coordination.

Where it landed

Roughly 165 paid engagements a year at peak, with bureau relationships I built personally accounting for about 35% of bookings. I also helped sell recurring marketing consulting alongside company leadership.

I build the sites too.

I'm not a developer. But I can take a business or an executive from positioning through story, structure, copy and a launched site, quickly, and often enough that it's part of how I work rather than something I hand off.

06 / About

I'm at my best when there's a complicated growth problem and nobody can quite agree on what's causing it.

Tyler Hayzlett in conversation at a C-Suite Network executive reception
C-Suite Network executive reception

The useful thing about my background is that I've sat on both sides of it. I've been in the room where strategy gets decided, and I've been the person who had to go make it real when there was no department to hand it to. That means I don't propose things that can't be built, and I can usually tell early whether a plan will survive contact with the actual business.

I don't have a favorite channel. I care about whether the offer is right, whether the right people know about it, and whether the path from interest to revenue makes sense. Then I'm comfortable getting deep enough into the implementation to make sure it actually works.

I'm interested in businesses with something real to build.

Especially where marketing, sales, product and operations all have to work together, and where the next stage of growth needs more than adding another channel.
